The real scoop on College Game Days and Tailgates at Boston College
Boston College Eagles playing home at Alumni Stadium
MY DEAR FUTURE EAGLES – truth be told, school spirit was one of my main factors to consider when applying for colleges. Being from a high school with the bare minimum in spirit, I knew for a fact that I wanted to go to a place with a lot of energy and school pride.
Although Boston College is not one of the “Big Ten” Football Colleges like Clemson University or the Ohio State University, we are in fact home to a lot of Division 1 sports, such as football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s ice hockey, etc.
As a result, school spirit is high year-round and there is always something to look forward to on campus.
Boston College Football
There are about six home games each fall. They are most definitely what every student looks forward to on the weekends. On the morning of game days, students put on their best Boston College attire and go to tailgates before the games, which take place on both Lower Campus or Brighton Campus. It is the place to be if you want to grab a bite to eat, hype up before the game with your friends, as well as socialize with alumni.
The Red Bandana Game
When I first arrived at Boston College as a freshman, I was unaware of the backstory behind the “Red Bandana Game.” Every year, a 5K run and a home football game are dedicated in honor of Welles Remy Crowther.
Crowther was a former men’s lacrosse player at Boston College who later became known as the “Man in the Red Bandana” for the handkerchief he sported as a protective mask while saving as many as 18 lives in the World Trade Center before it collapsed during the 9/11 terrorist attack. Now, Welles Crowther’s legacy lives on as the Eagles honor him every year for his selflessness and heroism.
Boston College Ice Hockey

Towards the end of the football season, fear not, because the hockey season is just the start. Head over to Conte Stadium and grab a hot chocolate on the way in.
The Beanpot
The Beanpot is an annual tournament between four of Boston’s men’s hockey teams: Boston College, Boston University, Harvard University, and Northeastern University.
The same four teams play every year at TD Garden in two semifinal games, with the winners advancing to compete for the reigning Beanpot champion title as well as bragging rights for the next year.
This event is extremely popular and many students line up to get tickets days in advance. As the tournaments take place at TD Garden downtown, it is a great way to get off campus while supporting our hockey team against our Boston rivals.
