Eat Like a Smithie

Smith College lies in the heart of Northampton: a small, sunny town rich with nature, friendly neighbors, and the most extraordinary foods. Soft smells and laughter dominate this quiet paradise, with cultures from all over the world represented.

Northampton has so many dining options that it can make any student dizzy! Well, how do I start my day? My mornings are filled with savory waffles at Jakes. Afterward, I grab some hot coffee from Familiars to help get me ready for the day. What about lunch and dinner? Northampton is a cornucopia of cultural foods, and you can’t beat Oriental Taste’s dim sum happy hour! And for that occasional sweet tooth? Herrell’s Ice Cream & Bakery with its sugary scoops is the perfect medicine.

Northampton’s Hidden Gem

Iconica Social Club

Most people would not choose to walk through dark alleyways, but perhaps the colorful side roads of Northampton are worth it. Iconica is a special little place, hidden away like a fairytale cottage. Here, students can do homework in the cafe’s antique study rooms, drink organic cold-pressed juices, and even read books from their library.

Breakfast & Brunch

Jake’s

Jake’s is a beloved restaurant in Northampton. It brings together classic American cuisine with a blend of Southern love! Pancakes, biscuits, beef barbacoa, and cavatappi dishes are meant to be shared among friends all year long.

Belly of the Beast

One of the best things about Northampton is the town’s emphasis on locally-grown, farm-to-table food! And Smithies cannot get enough of Belly of the Beast. This cafe is special for its grandmother-style hospitality and delicious homemade dishes.

Lunch & Dinner

Yokohama Ramen

Ever tired of that cheap cup of ramen you have stored for when you’re feeling lazy? Well, Smithies go to Yokohama for their hot, steaming bowls of delicious ramen, where the food takes you right to the heart of Japan.

Thai Garden

Northampton has so many different types of cuisines that it can be overwhelming to choose. But for those late-night munchies, nothing beats the crispy chicken pad thai at Thai Garden! This restaurant boasts authentic Thai food with rich spices and a great dining atmosphere.

Filos Greek Taverna

Where do pizza lovers at Smith go for the perfect slice? The answer might surprise you. Filos Greek Taverna has delicious slices of oven-baked pizza. A Mediterranean twist is enough to separate this paradise from the rest of the pack, plus their falafels are to die for.

Spoleto

Classic Italian food is always welcome in the bellies of hungry college students, and Spoleto is one of the best places to dine. Fresh pasta cooked in savory sauces is drool-worthy. PS: the crazy Alfredo is especially delicious.

Local Burger

Studying should always be accompanied by a good burger and milkshake, and Local Burger stays open until 10 pm every day of the week. Their chocolate raspberry truffle shake is to die for!

If Someone Else Is Buying

Sylvester’s

When visiting family members or friends want to go out to eat, it’s up to the students to host them. Of course, nothing beats the classic American style of Sylvester’s. This restaurant is known for its breakfast, but they also offer soups, salads, and sandwiches.

Osaka

Everyone knows that the best place for a special celebration is with the sizzling meats and fresh sushi of Osaka! Japanese-styled goodness wrapped up with a satin bow, perfect for a date night meal.

Coffee, Bars, and Drinks Galore

LimeRed Teahouse

It’s no mystery that college students live and breathe bubble tea—and Smithies are no exception. On hot, sunny days, students line up at LimeRed Teahouse for those drinkable, fruity flavors and yummy macaroons.

Fitzwilly’s

Ask anyone in town for the most beloved bar, and they’ll point you to the green banister down the street. Fitzwilly’s is THE bar in Northampton for both students of legal age and loyal townsfolk alike. With such friendly faces and good drinks, how could you miss it?

Dobra Tea

There is no place more inviting and relaxing than the soft pillows and warm smells of Dobra Tea. Students flock in droves to this little spot for calming study parties with a cup of tea in one hand and mochi in the other.

Dessert

Herrell’s Ice Cream & Bakery

Perhaps the most famous ice cream shop in Northampton is Herrell’s. It’s not unusual to see a line of hungry customers outside for some scoops of homemade ice cream. Herrell’s is known for having both classic and unique flavors to explore, so a sweet tooth is required!

Absolute Zero

Summers in Northampton can be scorching hot, and only the most chilled of treats can help to cool off. Look no further than Absolute Zero: the only place in Northampton for Thai, hand-rolled ice cream! With an endless supply of toppings, the options are infinite. I love the matcha ice cream with strawberries and chocolate drizzled all over it.
